Label text:Originally owned by Mrs. Mary Ella Dignam, grandmother of donor. Mary Dignam was born in 1857 at Port Burwell, Ontario, the daughter of Byron Williams and Eleanor Ferguson and wife of John Sifton. She was the founder of the Woman's Art Association of Canada and the First Head of the Art Department at McMaster University. As one of Canada's first women painters, she studied painting at the New York Art Students League and exhibited in Paris, London and New York.
