These photographs document the work of the donor's great grandfather James Thomson who was a furniture designer, cabinet marker of very considerable skill, living early on in Montreal, and contributing to many of the prominent interiors of the time, and also well known for the Parliamentary Chair. The photographs of his work were taken by William Notman, a very famous Canadian photographer about whom there are many books published some of the photographs listed here can be found in publications, but many are not. A major collection of Notman's work is at the McCord Museum in Montreal.
