Label text:Found in a trunk in Mrs. Fraser's grandmother's attic; grandmother was Mary Young, whose father served with the British Army first in the West Indies and later in Canada, settling in Hamilton. Mary Young on marriage moved to Burlington where she raised ten children. Later they moved to Oakville where they built a house on the corner of William and Trafalgar in 1913. Mary Young's married name is Caddy (John Herbert Caddy (1801-1883) and the costume came from the Caddy side of the family.
This dress of embroidered Spitalfields silk is created from fabric made circ 1740-1750 and re-worked from the original dress into the style popular circa 1760-1770.

DescriptionWomen's embroidered Spitalfields silk brocade dress with cream ground and trailing floral sprays, flowers of rose, purple, blue, yellow and pinks with leaves in shades of green; flowers depicted include pansies, stylized carnations, closed hibiscus buds and prays of small pink, yellow and blue flowers; sack back robe with double pleats at centre back, fullness extends to hem; bodice of robe in four parts, sewn on bands from back shoulder closing at the front centre in squared point; linen lining; side pockets opening from waist with inverted pleat at base of pocket; sleeves set in with sloping shoulder line and single arm seam (altered); lace frills of tambour net; skirt of five widths of fabric; front in shallow inverted V at top; shaped with darts; pockets in sides; waistline altered and unsewn; back has woven double line of green locenges, removed in front and V bound with modern gros-grain ribbon; back side seam undone; finely boned bodice of green-grey watered silk with linen lining; front has corded lacing across centre section; centre back closing with eyelets and laces; tabs below waist bound in grey grosgrain ribbon; six tabs on each side to front; the whole finely stitched in vertical 1/4" lines.
