Label text:This quilt was made by Mrs. Mary Alton McDuffee, daughter of John Alton, who lived on the farm next to Mr. Ernest Wilson's farm on what is now Lakeshore Rd. E. Mary was also the sister of Mrs. Charles Hardy - Sarah Alton Hardy of Upper Middle Road and Ninth Line. This masterpiece was sewn in the 1850's likely by candlelight. It is made up of 56 blocks, each block has 53 pieces in it. This means there are 2968 little pieces in the quilt plus all the quilting. With a grain sack stencilled "A" from the Alton Mill.
