Frederick Arthur Verner was born and grew up in a small village which is now part of the Town of Oakville. Verner was a Canadian lanscape painter whose works are valued more for their historical content than their artistic attributes. This painting acts as a pictoral document of Oakville in the mid-19th century as it represents Oakville's Sixteen Mile Creek, the train and railway bridge with the newly established (1855) service between Toronto and Hamilton, and features the mill built by William Chisholm circa 1830, which was destroyed by fire in 1927.
DescriptionFramed oil painting on canvas "Mill on the Sixteen" depicting Oakville's Sixteen Mile Creek, its surrounding landscape, a mill on the bank of the creek, and a train steaming across a bridge; two figural representations within the composition include a man in a small boat in the foreground and a man fishing on the shoreline.
