Label text:This ashtray stand was made from a baluster from the main staircase in Mount Vernon (formerly owned by John and Emelda Chisholm) When Mount Vernon burned in 1928, the donor's father, Robert Veitch Brodie (a fire fighter) acquired the baluster from the cooling ashes. Robert Veitch Brodie was a ship's carpenter before coming to Oakville in 1907.
