Label text:Scott Paper Co. introduced disposable clothing in 1966. It was originally used as a promotional gimmick. The first dress was a sleeveless shift that sold for a dollar. In eight month, Scott sold 500 000 dresses. This lead to other designers and manufactures to start producing disposable clothing as well.

Mars Hosiery of Asheville first ran their ad in the 1968 edition of Parade magazine. It was a yellow pages dress for a dollar. Two day after the add run, Mars received about 5 000 orders. By the end of the week they had approximately 50 000 orders. Their success continued after Vogue magazine featured their products in a spread. Abraham & Strauss Department Stores (now Macy’s) created a separate department to sell the dress and other disposable clothing called the Waste Basket Boutique.
