Label text:The lace on this dress is known as chemical lace, produced in a pattern based on the bobbin lace tradition. Chemical laces are traditionally machine-made from plant based materials such as cotton or linen, stitched onto a ground of animal derived fibres such as silk or wool. When dipped into certain chemicals, the ground dissolves away, leaving the cotton or linen lace-like pattern. This chemical lace was made specifically for the dress. The lavender flowers within the needlepoint-like design would have been created during the lace making process.
